Swish Hoops Scores Big
Miami’s Premiere Men’s Basketball League
Swish.
That’s the sound you’ll hear at most basketball courts, but it seems to be louder at the 8th Swish Hoops Men’s Basketball League.
Held at the Michael – Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in North Miami Beach, the league features four competition based divisions; all of which complete with sponsors and uniforms.
League Director Federico Brodsky, a former Argentinean professional basketball player, got his inspiration for the league from a non-profit basketball tournament that he was participating in.
“I saw how many guys were ready and willing to play basketball, so I pitched the idea to the JCC staff and they let me take on the project.”
Brodsky turned his small project into a major reality as the league is fully sponsored by Bawls energy drink and going strong into its 8th season.
The A-League division is the most competitive and has the deepest pool of talent, as such talents as former Univ. of Miami standouts Will Frisby and Keaton Copeland grace some of the rosters.
Brodsky said this year’s league is probably the most competitive one so far.
“The level of competition here is so high,” Brodsky said. “We have a lot of really good guys coming here to play basketball, and that’s what makes even more good guys come in to play.”
Along with the former college players you’ll see, you can spot a couple other influential figures from around Miami-Dade. Miami Northwestern’s new athletic director Earl Allick, Miami Central’s head basketball coach Kenneth James, and three of Northwestern’s basketball coaching staff, including head coach Sam Watts.
The three other divisions, B-1, B-2, and C, don’t disappoint as they give “weekend warriors” and a bunch of 30-somethings a chance to show off their skills on the hardwood.
Brodsky, who also plays in the A and B-1 divisions, said that the league is still growing.
“The league is good now, but I know we can make it even bigger,” Brodsky said. “I want to have the best adult talent from all three counties to come play in this league.”
